DELE vs SIELE vs CELU: Spanish Exam Guide for 2026
Actualizado: 3 sept
Do you need an official Spanish certificate for university, work, immigration or a personal goal? Choosing the right exam matters because DELE, SIELE and CELU measure Spanish differently and their certificates are not interchangeable in every situation.
This 2026 guide compares the three main options international students encounter in Argentina. You will learn how each exam works, how long its results remain valid and which questions to ask before registering.
Spanish Exams at a Glance
DELE: choose a specific CEFR level from A1 to C2; pass or fail; diploma does not expire.
SIELE: digital, score-based assessment; complete or partial modalities; certificate or report is valid for five years.
CELU: Argentina’s official proficiency certificate; one integrated exam awards the level demonstrated; no expiration date.
Important: Always ask the university, employer or government office which certificate, level and format it accepts. Recognition requirements can vary, and the institution receiving your result makes the final decision.
What Is the DELE?
DELE stands for Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera. The diplomas are issued by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of Spain’s Ministry of Education. They are widely recognized as official evidence of Spanish proficiency.
DELE offers separate examinations aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages:
A1 and A2: basic communication in familiar situations.
B1 and B2: independent use of Spanish for daily, academic and professional contexts.
C1 and C2: advanced and highly proficient language use.
You register for one specific level. To obtain the diploma, you must meet the passing requirements established for that exam. A candidate who takes B2 does not receive a B1 diploma simply for performing below B2.
Main Advantages of DELE
Permanent validity: the diploma does not expire.
Levels through C2: useful for candidates who need the highest CEFR certification.
Official status and broad recognition: frequently requested for academic or professional purposes.
A precise target: preparation can focus on the tasks and expectations of one level.
Possible Disadvantages
You must choose your level before registering.
The result is pass or fail rather than a detailed overall score across a broad continuum.
Examination dates and registration periods are fixed.
Results may take longer than those of a digitally managed test.
DELE may be the best choice when an institution specifically requests it, you need a permanent diploma or you want to certify a precise level—including C2.
What Is the SIELE?
SIELE stands for Servicio Internacional de Evaluación de la Lengua Española. It is promoted by the Instituto Cervantes, the National Autonomous University of Mexico, the University of Salamanca and the University of Buenos Aires.
The exam is managed digitally and evaluates Spanish through four skills:
Reading comprehension
Listening comprehension
Written expression and interaction
Oral expression and interaction
SIELE Global evaluates all four skills and awards a numerical score related to CEFR proficiency levels. Candidates may also choose an independent modality that combines selected skills when they do not require a complete assessment.
The complete exam takes approximately three hours, plus a break. Reading and listening are automatically scored, while qualified evaluators assess written and oral production. Official information indicates that results are issued within a maximum of three weeks.
Main Advantages of SIELE
Digital format: registration, testing and results are handled electronically.
Flexible modalities: you may certify all four skills or selected combinations.
Score-based result: the certificate shows what you demonstrated rather than requiring you to pass a preselected level.
Faster results: useful when an application deadline is approaching.
Multiple Spanish varieties: the exam includes language from different parts of the Spanish-speaking world.
Possible Disadvantages
The certificate or report is valid for five years.
Not every institution accepts partial SIELE modalities.
A digital exam may feel less natural to candidates who prefer writing or speaking with an examiner in person.
SIELE may be the best choice when you need a result relatively quickly, prefer a digital exam or want a current score showing your proficiency without selecting a pass-or-fail level in advance.
What Is the CELU?
CELU means Certificado de Español: Lengua y Uso. It is Argentina’s official Spanish proficiency certificate for people whose first language is not Spanish. It is granted by the Interuniversity Consortium for the Teaching and Testing of Spanish as a Second and Foreign Language and is officially recognized by Argentina’s education and foreign-affairs authorities.
CELU focuses on the ability to use Spanish in authentic academic, professional and social contexts. Candidates work with realistic texts and audio, produce written responses for specific audiences and complete an oral interaction.
Unlike DELE, CELU uses one proficiency examination. The result reflects the level demonstrated by the candidate. An important 2026 update is that CELU now certifies three levels: Basic, Intermediate and Advanced. The certificate has no expiration date.
Main Advantages of CELU
Argentine official recognition and strong relevance for candidates studying or working in Argentina.
No expiration date.
Integrated, real-life tasks instead of isolated grammar questions.
One exam: the level awarded depends on your performance.
Regional relevance: useful for people whose plans involve Argentina or institutions that recognize CELU.
Possible Disadvantages
It is less widely known internationally than DELE.
Exam dates and availability may be more limited.
You must verify whether your receiving institution accepts CELU and which level it requires.
CELU may be the best choice when you need certification for an academic or professional purpose connected with Argentina, value authentic language-use tasks or want a certificate without an expiration date.
DELE vs SIELE vs CELU: The Key Differences
1. Result Type
DELE is a diploma for a level selected in advance and requires a passing result. SIELE reports a numerical score related to CEFR levels. CELU uses one integrated test and awards the proficiency level demonstrated.
2. Validity
DELE and CELU certificates do not expire. SIELE certificates and reports have a five-year validity period. A permanent certificate may be preferable for a long-term credential, while a time-limited score can show an institution your recent ability.
3. Highest Level
DELE offers examinations through C2. SIELE reports proficiency on its scoring scale and does not function as a separate C2 diploma. CELU uses its own Basic, Intermediate and Advanced certification levels, with official correspondences explaining how they relate to other frameworks.
4. Format
DELE follows the format established for the selected level and includes receptive and productive skills. SIELE is fully digital and records oral responses. CELU integrates reading, listening, writing and speaking through contextualized tasks.
5. Spanish Variety
All three evaluate internationally intelligible Spanish. SIELE deliberately includes several educated varieties of Spanish. CELU is designed in Argentina but does not require candidates to imitate an Argentine accent. DELE candidates may also use an accepted Spanish variety consistently.
6. Availability and Timing
DELE and CELU operate on scheduled examination dates. SIELE generally offers more appointment flexibility through authorized centers. Dates, fees and result timelines can change, so check the official exam website before making travel or application plans.
Which Spanish Exam Should You Choose?
Choose DELE if you need a permanent, internationally established diploma for a specific CEFR level or require C2.
Choose SIELE if you need a digital, score-based assessment, faster results or certification of selected skills.
Choose CELU if your goal is closely connected to Argentina and the receiving institution accepts the Argentine certificate.
If an organization says only “proof of Spanish,” do not assume that every exam will work. Ask in writing:
Which exams are accepted?
What minimum level or score is required?
Must all four skills be certified?
How recent must the result be?
Is a digital certificate acceptable?
How to Prepare for Any Spanish Proficiency Exam
Know Your Starting Level
Take a placement assessment and discuss the result with a teacher. A realistic diagnosis prevents you from registering for an exam that is too easy, too difficult or unsuitable for your deadline.
Learn the Exam, Not Only the Language
General Spanish ability is essential, but exam technique matters. Work with official sample tasks, understand the instructions and practice under time limits. Learn how each task is evaluated so you can allocate your effort effectively.
Practice All Required Skills
Students often study grammar while neglecting speaking or writing. Build a balanced routine that includes timed reading, active listening, structured writing and regular oral practice.
Get Specific Feedback
“Study more vocabulary” is not enough. Useful feedback identifies recurring problems—organization, register, accuracy, pronunciation, task completion or time management—and gives you a plan to correct them.
Use Spanish Outside Class
If you are in Buenos Aires, treat the city as part of your preparation. Listen to local media, participate in conversations, read notices and articles, and summarize what you experienced. Our guide to choosing a Spanish school in Buenos Aires explains what to look for in a program.
Preparing for a Spanish Exam at Rivendell
At Rivendell Spanish College in Palermo, preparation begins with your objective. We consider your present level, the certificate requested by your institution and the time available before the exam.
Effective preparation should combine language development with guided practice in the relevant task types. It should also be honest: no school can guarantee a result, but structured work, expert feedback and consistent practice can make you considerably better prepared.
Students visiting Argentina can also use everyday life to strengthen their Spanish. Read what tourists need to know before visiting Argentina for practical language and local advice.
Final Recommendation
Do not choose an exam because one is described as universally “better.” Choose the certificate that your receiving institution accepts and that matches your level, deadline, preferred format and long-term plans.
If you are unsure where to begin, contact Rivendell Spanish College with the name of the exam or institution involved. We can help you identify the questions to ask, assess your starting point and organize a realistic preparation plan in Buenos Aires.
