Planning a trip to Argentina? This vibrant country offers incredible landscapes, rich culture, and warm hospitality, but there are a few things you should know before packing your bags. From currency tips to finding the best Spanish school in Buenos Aires, we’ve got you covered!

1. Money and Currency Exchange

Argentina’s official currency is the Argentine peso (ARS). However, many businesses, especially in tourist areas, accept U.S. dollars or euros. Bring cash if possible, as the “blue dollar” rate (an unofficial exchange rate) often gives better value than withdrawing pesos from ATMs. You can exchange money at cambios (exchange offices) or ask locals about trusted “blue dollar” exchange locations.

Tip: Always check the daily exchange rate and avoid street exchangers for security reasons.

A good way to send yourself money and avoid using ATM, is using Western Union. You can always send yourself some money from your credit or debit cards and pick up the money in Cash in any Western Union agency. Tip: the fist transaction is allowed to be done without paying fees or any other thing. Take advantage of it.

2. Transportation

Argentina’s public transport is affordable and reliable in major cities. In Buenos Aires, the subte (subway) and buses are the most common modes of transport. You’ll need a rechargeable SUBE card to pay for fares. To take the subway you can also use your credit cards or contactless payment of your phone in the available gates (They have a dark blue colour on their screens).

For long-distance travel, Argentina has a well-developed bus network (comfortable with reclining seats) and domestic flights.

Tip: Taxis and ride-sharing apps like Uber and Didib are widely available, but confirm the fare beforehand to avoid surprises.

3. Mobile Service and Internet

Staying connected is easy. Purchase a prepaid SIM card from companies like Claro, Movistar, or Personal at kiosks or phone stores. Plans are affordable and include data for navigating the city and staying in touch.

Tip: Free Wi-Fi is common in cafes, restaurants, and public spaces, so you won’t always need mobile data.

4. Studying Spanish

If you want to make the most of your trip, learning some Spanish is essential. Whether you’re staying for a few weeks or months, Rivendell Spanish College in Palermo, Buenos Aires, offers personalized Spanish courses for all levels. Our school provides a welcoming environment, a practical teaching method, and even cultural immersion experiences to help you navigate Argentina confidently.

5. Accommodation

Options range from budget-friendly hostels to luxurious hotels and Airbnb rentals. In Buenos Aires, neighborhoods like Palermo, Belgrano, Recoleta, and San Telmo (not that safe) are popular among tourists for their charm and safety.

Tip: Book in advance during peak seasons (December–February and July) to secure the best rates.

6. Security

While Argentina is generally safe, tourists should remain cautious. Pickpocketing and scams can occur in crowded areas.

• Keep valuables close and avoid showing off expensive items.

• Use trusted transportation options, especially at night.

• Be aware of your surroundings in busy places like Retiro Station or La Boca.

Generally what they do is to call your attention dropping something onto the floor, and that is the moment when they steal or pocketlift.

• Comfortable shoes: You’ll be walking a lot, especially in cities like Buenos Aires.

• Travel adapter: Argentina uses type C and I plugs with 220V.

• Reusable water bottle: Tap water is generally safe to drink in most urban areas.

• Layered clothing: The weather can change drastically depending on the region and season.

• Cash: For better exchange rates and places that don’t accept cards.
